St Mary Magdalen’s
St Mary Magdalen was a follower of Jesus. We’re not really sure how she came to be so, but she was present at the crucifixion of Jesus, and at his resurrection. She was the first to see the Risen Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane after she went to anoint his body in the tomb. She is known as the Apostle to the Apostles, as she ran to tell the disciples the news that Jesus had risen from the dead.
The new community of Coldean first began holding church services in the school in early 1953. It soon became apparent that a proper church building was needed, and the Diocese of Chichester purchased the land surrounding a disused 16th century barn. Work soon began to convert the barn into a church, which opened for worship by the end of 1955.
